The Garden State Parkway is closed both directions from Exit 38 to Exit 63 UFN due to heavy fog & smoke from Bass River State Forest wildfire.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service is making substantial progress in containing a wildfire burning in the area of Allen Road in Bass River State Forest.


The wildfire has reached over 5,000 acres in size and is 50% contained.

A backfiring operation to help contain the fire continued today to assist in achieving containment goals.

ROAD CLOSURES

⚠️ Oswego Road is closed
⚠️ Stage Road is closed between North Maple Avenue and Rt. 679
⚠️ Rt. 679 is closed between Rt. 563 and Leaktown Road, and now the Garden State Parkway

STRUCTURES THREATENED
⚠️ The Timberline Campground remains closed
✅ 0 residential structures are threatened

TRAIL CLOSURES
⚠️ The Batona Trail is closed in Bass River State Forest

Helpful Wildfire Terminology
🔥 Wildfire – An uncontrolled fire burning the different types of vegetation that cover the land. A wildfire is considered a “major wildfire” after it exceeds 100 acres in size.
🔥 Containment – When reporting on a wildfire a percentage of containment will be given, which will state how much of the fireline has been completed.
🔥 Backfire – A fire intentionally set along the interior edge of a fireline by Forest Fire Service staff to consume fuel in the path of a wildfire and/or to change the direction of force of a fire’s convection column.
🔥 Fireline – The part of a containment or control line that is scraped or dug to mineral soil.
🔥 Threatened – Critical infrastructure, roads, homes and commercial buildings that are in the vicinity of a wildfire.
