BERKELEY: On July 19th 2023, at approximately 07:00 hours the Berkeley Township Police responded to the area of 441 Atlantic City Blvd (Berkeley Plaza/Chicken Holiday) for a report of a motor vehicle crash. Upon arrival officers observed a four vehicle crash involving a Blue Rhino Propane transport tractor trailer that was into the building.

Preliminary Investigation revealed that the tractor trailer was traveling south bound on Atlantic City Blvd and the driver Todd Giglio 57 of Whiting had a medical episode. Mr. Giglio went through the red traffic signal at Atlantic City Blvd and Frederick Dr and struck a silver Hyundai Tucson that was stopped at the red traffic signal facing north bound. The Hyundai was struck head on and was then pushed into a telephone pole and air bags were deployed. The driver of the Tucson was treated for chest pain and ultimately refused to go to the hospital for further evaluation.

The tractor trailer then proceeded to jump the curb and enter the Berkeley Plaza. The tractor trailer struck a stationary Chevy box truck used for advertisements, causing the box truck to overturn. The tractor trailer then drove over a curbed median taking out several bushes before striking two unoccupied vehicles that were parked in the parking lot in front of Pet Supplies Plus. The parked vehicles were a black Jeep Laredo and a white Ford Expedition.

The tractor trailer was diverted in the direction of Chicken Holiday after striking the Jeep Laredo. The tractor trailer then jumped the curb and crashed through the entrance of Chicken Holiday causing extensive damage to the building. The Bayville Fire department, NJ Natural Gas, and the Berkeley Twp. building inspector responded to make the scene safe. Chicken Holiday, Acme Draft House, Lee Nails, and Pet Supplies Plus were deemed structurally unsafe for the time being. Those businesses are temporarily closed until further notice. Mr. Giglio was transported by Berkeley Twp. EMS for further evaluation. This crash is still under investigation by Ptl. Lagreca of the Berkeley Township Traffic Safety Bureau.
