Man Arrested, Handgun Recovered Following Foot Pursuit

ATLANTIC CITY: On March 31, 2023, officers from the Atlantic City Police Department’s Patrol Division arrested a man armed with a handgun after a brief foot chase.

At approximately 5:15 PM, Officers Adrian Nunez-Santos and Riley Flynn were patrolling the area of the 500 block of north South Carolina Avenue when they observed Michael Aybar-Fernandez standing in front of an apartment building and attempted to stop him as part of a criminal investigation. Upon seeing the officers, Aybar-Fernandez immediately retreated into the apartment building.

Shortly after, officers were alerted that Aybar-Fernandez had exited the rear of the building through an apartment window. Officers Julian Monsalve and Atiqul Islam observed Aybar-Fernandez walking in the rear of the apartment building and attempted to stop him. Aybar-Fernandez began to run, and a brief foot pursuit ensued. As officers gave chase, they observed Aybar-Fernandez throw a handgun onto the rooftop of a maintenance building. Aybar-Fernandez was ultimately apprehended a short distance away and was placed in custody without further incident. Officers subsequently located and recovered the loaded handgun that was fitted with a high-capacity magazine and hollow point bullets on the roof of the maintenance building.

ARRESTED: Michael Aybar-Fernandez, 23, from Atlantic City.

CHARGES: Unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of hollow point ammunition, possession of a high-capacity magazine, resisting arrest, and obstruction.

Aybar-Fernandez was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility. The public is reminded that all charges are mere allegations, and the accused is considered innocent until proven guilty.
