Hundreds Evacuating As Fire Spreads to Over 2,500 Acres

MANCHESTER: There have been significant updates to the wildfire burning in Manchester Township on federal, state and private property.

⚠️ The fire has grown to 2,500 acres and is 10% contained.
⚠️ Mandatory evacuations have been ordered in Lakehurst from Division St. to Route 70, Horicon Ave, and Beckerville Road. Approximately 170 structures were evacuated in Manchester and Lakehurst.
⚠️ 75 structures are threatened.
⚠️ Residents evacuated have been relocated to the Manchester Township High School and are being supported by the American Red Cross, Manchester Township EMS, Manchester Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department.

⚠️ Route 539 is closed from Route 70 to Long Swamp Road.
⚠️ Route 70 is closed Lakehurst Circle to Beckerville West Road.
⚠️ Horicon Ave is closed.
⚠️ Beckerville East Road and Beckerville West Road are closed.

Backfiring operations continue by Forest Fire Service personnel. Structure protection is being provided by local volunteer fire departments.

Helpful Wildfire Terminology
🔥 Wildfire – An uncontrolled fire burning the different types of vegetation that cover the land. A wildfire is considered a “major wildfire” after it exceeds 100 acres in size.
🔥 Containment – When reporting on a wildfire a percentage of containment will be given, which will state how much of the fireline has been completed.
🔥 Backfire – A fire intentionally set along the interior edge of a fireline by Forest Fire Service staff to consume fuel in the path of a wildfire and/or to change the direction of force of a fire’s convection column.
🔥 Fireline – The part of a containment or control line that is scraped or dug to mineral soil.
🔥 Threatened – Critical infrastructure, roads, homes and commercial buildings that are in the vicinity of a wildfire.
