Update on 1,000 Acre Forest Fire in Passaic County

WILDFIRE UPDATE: West Milford Twp. – Kanouse Wildfire

At 10 a.m. Saturday, April 15, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service achieved 100 percent containment of a 972-acre wildfire in West Milford Township on Newark Watershed property.

ROAD CLOSURES
⚠️ Echo Lake Road remains closed between Rt. 23 and Macopin Rd. The road has numerous fire weakened/dead trees creating a hazard along the roadway.

Forest Fire Service staff will remain on scene to continue improving containment lines and monitor the area to ensure public safety. A smoke condition will likely be present north and east of the fire, including in low lying areas until wetting rainfall is received.

10 structures were threatened by the fire, and five structures were evacuated. Structure protection was provided by local volunteer fire companies, we thank them for their assistance.

The fire’s cause remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.

No further updates are expected to be released for this incident.
