Suicidal Male Taken into Custody for Warrant
For Immediate Release: May 5, 2023
ATLANTIC CITY: On May 2, 2023, at approximately 4:47 PM Officer Salvatore Rando Jr. was flagged down by a boardwalk ambassador in reference to a male that appeared to be in distress. The male was seen going into the ocean at Hartford Avenue and the beach.
Officer Rando immediately responded to the beach and located the male, Darren Brathwaite, in the surf in waist high water. Brathwaite appeared distraught and refused initial commands to exit the water. The Atlantic City Fire Department water rescue team was activated.
With assistance from additional responding officers and EMS personnel, Brathwaite was persuaded to exit the water and walk to the shoreline where he was met by Officer Rebecca Seabrook and EMS personnel.
Brathwaite was subsequently transported by ambulance to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Division, for evaluation. A brief investigation revealed that Brathwaite was involved in a domestic violence incident in Brooklyn, NY, and was wanted for attempted murder. Brathwaite was ultimately taken into custody.
ARRESTED: Darren Brathwaite, 36, of Brooklyn, NY.
CHARGES: Fugitive from Justice.
Brathwaite was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility where he will await extradition. The public is reminded that charges are mere allegations, and the accused is considered innocent until proven guilty.
